Disney’s live action remake of Aladdin topped the weekend box office in its debut weekend. The remake took in an estimated $86.1 million over the American Memorial Day long weekend. The opening is the fourth best for one of Disney’s live action remakes behind 2016’s The Jungle Book. To date the higest opening for one of Disney’s animated to real life remakes was 2017’s Beauty and the Beast which opened to $174 million.
Last week’s top three films took the next three spots in the top five. LionsGate’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum took in another $24.4 million, good enough for second place over the weekend. Disney’s powerhouse Avengers Endgame stayed in the top five with another $16.8 million and third place. Warner Bros.’ Pokémon Detective Pikachu earned another $13.3 million and landed in forth spot.
Screen Gem’s anti superhero movie Brightburn opened in the fifth spot with an estimated $7.5 million.

Next weekend sees a pair of highly anticipated features as well as a thriller. Paramount will bring the fantastical biopic musical film Rocketman about the life of Elton John to theatres on Friday. Also looking to tear up the box office is Godzilla: King of the Monsters from Warner Bros. Finally Universal will unleash the thriller Ma into theatres.
