Apes win the War of the Weekend Box Office | July 14-16 2017

20th Century Fox’s conclusion to the Planet of the Apes trilogy War for the Planet of the Apes took the top spot at the weekend box office with an estimated $56.5 million. The opening is up from the first film in the trilogy however it is lower than the most recent 2014 film.

Taking the second spot is the first MCU film for the webslinger with Spider-Man: Homecoming netting another $45.2 million at the North American box office. The film has already generated north of $200 million domestically and more than $450 worldwide since release two weeks ago. The third Despicable Me film took the third spot at the box office third week of release. Despicable Me 3 earned another $19.0 million over the weekend. The film has turned in an estimated $187 million domestically and in total the film has scored $619 million globally.

Tri-Star’s Baby Driver landed in fourth spot with another $8.7 million while LionsGate Films’ The Big Sick moved up to fifth spot with the expansion into wide release.

Next weekend will see the wide release of several big films including Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets from STX, Dunkirk from Warner Bros., and Girls Trip from Warner Bros.
