Blade Runner 2049 speeds atop the Weekend Box Office | October 6-8, 2017

The long-awaited sequel Blade Runner 2049 landed atop the weekend box office over the holiday weekend with an estimated $31.4 million at the domestic box office. While it was a solid start, the opening is off from what would be expected from a film of this genre and the level of anticipation. Unlike many recent pictures the film is a sequel to the original Blade Runner which hit theatres in 1982 and not a reboot. It once again stars Harrison Ford with Ryan Gosling joining the film. The film also opened internationally with just over $50 million overseas.

20th Century Fox’s drama The Mountain Between Us debuted in the second place spot with $10.1 million while the top five stronghold It took the third place spot with another $9.6 million.

Animated feature from Lionsgate My Little Pony: The Movie debuted in the fourth spot with an soft $8.8 million. The film has only seen very limited international release so the global number has room for improvement.

Rounding out the top five is action flick Kingsman: The Golden Circle took in another $8.1 million to land in the fifth place spot. Including international cumes the film has generated $253.5 million worldwide since release a few weeks ago.

Next weekend sees a few releases for Friday the 13th including the action thriller The Foreigner from STX Entertainment as well as horror film Happy Death Day. Open Road Films will also open the drama film Marshall on Friday.

Locally in Hamilton you can catch a special screening of the original Paramount Friday the 13th film from 1980 at the Zoetic Theatre on Friday, the 13th.
