Sony’s second helping of The Equalizer opened at the top of the weekend box office with The Equalizer 2 taking in $35.8 million. The opening was slightly better than the original film which opened with $34.1 million four years ago.
Taking a close second was Universal’s own sequel offering with Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! taking in an estimated $34.4 million. The opening, which comes exactly ten years to the weekend since the first film, bested the opening of the original. Mamma Mia opened with $27.7 million back in 2008.
Rounding out the top five were holdovers from last week. Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 3 took in another $23.2 million while Disney/Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp earned another $16.1 million, and Disney/Pixar’s Incredibles 2 generated another $11.5 million.

Next weekend sees the release of highly anticipated Mission: Impossible – Fallout from Paramount Pictures. Warner Bros. Animation will also release Teen Titans Go! To The Movies.
