Is April Lavigne’s Hello Kitty Offensive?

April Lavigne has released a new song and music video called “Hello Kitty.” The music video has Lavigne singing and dancing on site in Japan with a backup cast of Japanese women.

Some people online have been calling the video racist. Avril Lavigne responded via Twitter.

“RACIST??? LOLOLOL!!! I love Japanese culture and I spend half of my time in Japan. I flew to Tokyo to shoot this video specifically for my Japanese fans, WITH my Japanese label, Japanese choreographers AND a Japanese director IN Japan.”

As someone who loves the Japanese culture I agree I don’t see anything particularly racist, or even offensive there. Kotaku East even pointed out that all of the things referenced in the video are true to life and not stereotypical.
