Disney’s sequel Maleficent: Mistress of Evil opened at the domestic box office over the weekend with an estimated $36.0 million. While the domesic opening isn’t as massive as some of Disney’s other recent entries, the film also opened globally as well and has picked up another $117 million in international markets. Globally the film opened with an estimated $153 million.
The other opener over the weekend was Sony’s zombie sequel with the debut of Zombieland 2: Double Tap. The film opened with an estimated $26.7 million at the North American box office. The opening is slightly ahead of the original film back in 2009, which went on to earn just over $75 million domestically.
The rest of the top five was populated with holdovers from the previous weeks. Warner Bros.’ Joker continued to hold strong and finished the weekend with $29.2 million in second place. United Artits’ animated The Addams Family dropped to fourth place with $16.1 million while Paramount’s action film Gemini Man dropped to fifth place in its sophomore weekend with another $8.5 million. Gemini Man has taken in approximately $118.7 million worldwide in two weeks of release.

Next weekend will see the action film Black and Blue hit theatres from Sony/Screen Gems while STX Entertainment will open the horror film Countdown. Jumping ahead two weeks the action film Terminator: Dark Fate will hit theatres from Paramount Pictures.
