MOVIE REVIEW mini: Sonic the Hedgehog

You never know with videogame movies but Sonic the Hedgehog exceeded my expectations.

Sonic looked great and Ben Schwartz hit it out of the park with his voice acting as Sonic. Jim Carrey was in his old form bringing back the energy and magic of his early career performances.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

For a film about a little blue alien running for his life from an evil genius doctor, they packed in a surprising amount of heart and emotion as there were underlying themes of loneliness, abandonment, and friendship. The story felt organic, made sense, and gave the film more impact than just a silly videogame movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog was great fun, funny, and touching at the same time. It’s a perfect family friendly film, a love letter to long time fans of Sonic, and a great time at the movies.
