The horror film from the producers of The Conjuring, The Curse of La Llorona, opened atop the weekend box office with an estimated $26.5 million. Released by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, the film had a modest micro-budget of just $9 million, making the film a success already. Warner’s other film Shazam! took the second spot over the weekend after placing first for the last two weeks. The superhero flick took in another $17.3 million.
Opening in third place was Breakthrough from 20th Century Fox. The “faith based” film opened with an estimated $9.2 million.
Rounding out the top five was Captain Marvel from Disney and Marvel, which jumped back into the top five with some of the hype from the upcoming release of Avengers Endgame next weekend. Captain Marvel took in another $9.1 million. Universal’s Little rounded out the top five with another $8.4 million in its second weekend.

Next weekend will see most studios taking a wide berth with the release of Disney/Marvel’s Avengers Endgame. The highly anticipated sequel is expected to dominate the box office.
