We’ve all had that one friend. A little bit eccentric but always fun to be around. Good natured and genuine while funny, bold, and just a little bit playful. That’s Leila.

Leila Live! opened tonight at Hamilton Fringe at the Cotton Factory. To be honest I didn’t know what to expect of the show and was sold at the preview event last night. The sometimes over-the-top Leila looked like someone that would be fun to experience and she definitely was.

Leila returns to Hamilton with a brand new cabaret. Hamilton holds a special place for the showrunner as the Fringe five years ago was the artist’s first solo showcase. This show features some acting, singing, dancing, rapping, comedy, impressions, sound effects and puppetry. There’s also a little bit of audience participation thrown in there too for good measure. And there’s even a mid-show snack served because why not?

Leila uses some humour pepper in some serious notes as well with some subtle notes about what it’s like to grow up as a Persian Canadian. Sharing some of the cultural experiences and differences between the culture and Canadian cultures was a fun comparison.

Leila Live! was at times a random experience but that kept the show fresh and engaging. One of the genres I’ve always enjoyed at the Fringe is the storyteller and Leila is a good one.

It’s only playing over the first weekend at the Hamilton Fringe and wraps up Sunday. It’s definitely worth checking out.
