The third film in the Maze Runner series, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, landed atop the box office in its opening weekend with an estimated $23.5 million at the domestic box office. Including international cumes the flick have surpassed $100 worldwide so far, though this is the lowest opening weekend for the series.
Taking the number two spot is last weeks #1 in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which took in another $16.4 million. Domestically the film is a hit with an estimated $338 million and a worldwide haul of $822 million since release.
The number three spot was filled with Hostiles over the weekend which saw the movie expand to a wider release. The film was #23 last weekend on just 119 screens. Hostiles earned an estimated $10.2 million in this its sixth weekend of release.
Rounding out the top five are last week’s fourth and fifth place movies, which reveresed spots this week. The Greatest Showman took in $9.5 million for fourth place while The Post earned $8.6 million for fifth place. Both films are distributed by 20th Century Fox.
Next weekend will see the wide release of horror film Winchester from Lionsgate, which for some reason is not a feature film adaptation of the tv series Supernatural.
