City of Hamilton to rename of Lawfield Arena after Bill Friday

Lawfield Arena on Hamilton mountain will be renamed in honour of Bill Friday on Thursday.

An event will be held to celebrate the renaming of the Lawfield Arena to the Bill Friday Lawfield Arena starting at 5:00 PM on April 6th. The official unveiling of the new building sign and ceremony will kick off at 5:30 PM with multiple members of council set to attend. Mayor Fred Eisenberger, Councillor Tom Jackson, and Councillor Donna Skelly will be in attendance, as will and Steve Staios, President of the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Bill Friday was a well-known Hamiltonian with over 19 years officiating ice hockey, 12 years in the National Hockey League (NHL) and 7 years in the World Hockey Association (WHA). During his career, he refereed 1,425 major league games, and he was the only referee to work both the Stanley Cup finals in the NHL and the Avco Cup finals in the WHA. A local Hamilton hockey legend Friday was inducted into the Hamilton Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. He was also elected to the WHA Hall of Fame in 2012.

Members of the Friday family will also be in attendance.

Lawfield Arena is located at 150 Folkstone Avenue on Hamilton mountain.
