Doors Open and Free Comic Book Day: A Busy Saturday

Saturday was a busy day, for a number of reasons.

Not only was it truly the first nice Saturday of the year, but it was also the start of Doors Open Hamilton weekend and it was Free Comic Book Day. So many sites around the city had their doors open to the public. Some of these sites aren’t open to visitors throughout the rest of the year while others offered free admission. There are so many places to go and sites to see that it can’t all be done in one day.

Luckily the annual event is two days long.

On the warm sunny day we managed to take in a few sites before we headed home to recharge, both physically and electronically (my camera battery ran out on us). We visitied the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre at the site of the former Robert Land School and paid a visit to the McMaster Innovation Park Atrium. While we didn’t have a chance to visit them all, there was definitely a wide variety and many sites that we had on our list, though not enough time to check them off.

All told there were more than two dozen sites open over the weekend. Sites like the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Cable 14 were among the sites downtown and there were also many of Hamilton’s historic cathedrals open to see. Next year won’t come soon enough.

Saturday also had the bonus of being Free Comic Book Day and we visited Comic Connection in Westdale Village. The small shop in the heart of the BIA was brimming with activity and their shop had spilled onto the sidewalk outside. Had we ventured to the Big B Comics on Upper James we would have also bumped into some colourful characters also perusing the comics.

No Saturday would be complete without a visit to Pier 4 Park, known to my kids as the ‘boat park.’ With a warm breeze blowing in from the water, the park was filled with young families and children running around, enjoying what felt very much like the start of summer.

If ever you have a Saturday off and the weather is as nice as it was yesterday, you deserve it to yourself to get out and enjoy it. For all we complained about the cold, wet, snowy and COLD winter we had, we should take advantage of the beautiful warm weather we have been having.
