How Many Buses Use the Bus Lane?

The bus lane in the downtown core has been a hot topic for the last year, since the lane was introduced in October 2013. And now with the report for the transit only lane publicly available and in the hands of Councillors, The report will be presented at the General Issues Committee meeting on Wednesday.

Most of the coverage around the lane, and concern surrounding the lane itself, is that it is causing congestion. Looking passed the simple changes that could be made to soften this, there is also the concern from businesses that parking has become an issue in the King West BIA. This has led to a downturn in business for those merchants.

One thing that has been overlooked somewhat is just how many buses travel this strip or roadway, especially that in the downtown core between John and James.

There are 83 individual bus trips travelling through the downtown core on King (between John and James) during weekday afternoon peak period. The breakdown or routes is included below, with the time period of 4:00pm – 5:00pm used.

When you break this down to how many people are travelling on those buses there are anywhere between 1,484 to 3,045 people traveling by bus in one hour. These figures are assuming that a bus is at half capacity for the low end and at capacity at the high end. It does not take into account any buses that may be over capacity with riders standing, which is common on many buses.

This is also inclusive of all buses which use this lane and not just the Hamilton Street Railway buses. Burlington Transit, GO Transit and Coach Canada also make use of this lane, as does Greyhound Canada.
