Powell Park Getting an Extreme Park Makeover

The Wever Core, the community group which operates out of Cathy Wever School in the Gibson neighbourhood, announced this morning that local neighbourhood green space Powell Park will be the latest in Hamilton to receive an Extreme Park Makeover.

The TVO television show The Giver is preparing to start their fourth season this September and the Hamilton park is on their list for rejuvenation.

TVO’s The Giver features groups of six children, aged 6-11, teaming up with community volunteers to design and build playgrounds in communities all across Ontario.

“Kids can and do make a difference,” said Pat Ellingson, creative head of TVOKids, back in 2012. “There are times we don’t give them enough credit for their ability to think about ‘the big picture.’ We underestimate their creative and strategic thinking abilities.”

The makeover will see the Powell Park receive new playground equipment, a freshly painted basketball court and new trees.

Wever Core is also starting plans for the Pollinator Patch. Chairs, umbrellas & art displays.

The makeover event is planned to take place over three days from September 10th to the 12th. The group is looking for about 200 volunteers to help with the project.

Anyone looking to volunteer can contact Wever Core via their Facebook page, by email at wevercore.ca or in person at the Gibson and Landsdale Neighbourhood Association (GALA) annual neighbourhood barbecue on Sunday, August 24th at Powell Park.

Other recent local park extreme makeovers include Birge Park back in 2011 and Cathy Wever School earlier this year.
