Saturday is Free Comic Book Day

This Saturday is Free Comic Book Day across North America and the world – a day where participating comic shops give away comic books to anyone coming into their stores. Free Comic Book Day takes place on the first Saturday of May and is an annual promotional effort by the North American comic book industry to help bring new readers into independent comic book stores. The annual event started back in 2002 and is coordinated by Diamond Comic Distributors, the industry’s single large distributor.

The promotion sees participation by many comic publishers, including Archie, Marvel, DC, TokyoPop as well as many independent publishers.

One local Hamilton store is taking advantage of the special day to help the less fortunate in the community. Conspiracy Comics on King Street West is hosting a Free Comic Book Day Food Drive. Between 11am and 6pm, after you stop in and pick up a free comic, for every non-perishable food item you donate you get an extra free comic of your choice!

Big B Comics has something similar planned. They plan to give away four free comics to everyone who comes into the store, plus an additional two comics for bringing a non-perishable food item, another two when you present your library card and another two if you dress in costume. Expect to see a lot of costume wearing, library card carrying, food donating people at the comic store.

There is a wide variety of comics to choose from, including Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Dark Horse has an Avatar: The Last Airbender comic, DC has The New 52 Futures End and Archie Comics has a Mega Man / Sonic the Hedgehog flipbook. You’ll also find Spongebob Squarepants, Transformers vs. G.I. Joe, Hello Kitty, Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, plus a selection of comics for a more mature audience.

The best thing about comics is that you can relive, or continue, your love for the cartoons you remember as a kid that aren’t made any more. There are classic cartoons which are getting the comic treatment, including The Tick and The Smurfs.

Take advantage of the opportunity, snag yourself a free comic and see what else the store has to offer. You might just find something you’ll like when you least suspect it.
