City Launches Community in Motion Awards

The City of Hamilton is launching a new annual awards program meant to recognize members of the community who have made an effort to actively support and promote the use of health and sustainable forms of transportation such as walking, cycling and public transit.

There are six award categories, including school of the year, advocate of the year, media award and three awards for business or organization that is bicycle, pedestrian or transit friendly.

Bicycle-friendly Business/Organization
This award is given to an individual business/organization or group of businesses/organizations that demonstrate significant impact on promoting cycling and a cycle-friendly environment through infrastructure, promotional programs or other similar initiatives. (e.g. providing bike parking, showers/lockers for commuters, and/or other incentives, contribution to cycling education etc.).

Pedestrian-friendly Business/Organization
This award is given to an individual business/organization or group of businesses/organizations that demonstrate significant impact on promoting pedestrian mobility and a pedestrian-friendly environment through infrastructure, promotional programs or other similar initiatives. The projects could include sidewalks improvements, streetscaping (e.g. benches, trees etc.), and supporting pedestrian-oriented events (e.g. incentives, education, and other activities).

Transit-friendly Business/Organization
This award is given to an individual business/organization or group of businesses/organizations that demonstrate significant impact on promoting transit and a transit-friendly environment through infrastructure, promotional programs or other similar initiatives. (e.g. discounts for patrons with transit pass, incentives for employees who use transit).

School of the Year
This award is given to the non-Post Secondary school that has shown leadership by demonstrating their efforts to encourage cycling and pedestrian activity for their students and staff during the year. Examples include bike parking/change facilities, bike-safety programs and workshops, school-wide promotions, and management of its Active and Safe Routes to School program. 

Advocate of the Year
This is awarded to the individual (or group) that has demonstrated leadership in advancing cycling, pedestrian, and/or transit initiatives and who has exhibited a tireless commitment to promoting cycling and walking in the City. The individual/ group has gone above and beyond expectations to transform Hamilton into a great place to use active transportation. Their time, knowledge, creativity, and dedication set a high standard of excellence exemplifying a role model for peers. 

Media Award
Awarded to a member of the media who has contributed to the advancement, promotion, or education of cycling, pedestrian and transit activity in the past year. (e.g. reporting on cycling and pedestrian events/issues or promoting use of active transportation in the newspaper, television, internet, and social media).

The city is accepting nominations in all categories up until August 31st with awards being announced during the next Open Streets Hamilton event on September 23rd.

Award winners will be chosen by a selection panel including delegates from the Hamilton Cycling Advisory Committee, the Hamilton Pedestrian Mobility Advisory Committee, the Hamilton Transportation Management Association, the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce as well as three members of the Public Works department.
