Allan Cup is making history; coming to Hamilton and Dundas in 2020

The Allan Cup Hockey Tournament is returning to Hamilton for the first time since 2014, but with a difference.

This time for the first time ever, the tournament will be co-hosted by two Senior AAA hockey clubs, the Dundas Real McCoys and the Hamilton Steelhawks because the proximity of their arenas, the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena and the JL Grightmire Arena, permit it. The Tournament was previously hosted by Dundas in 2003 and 2014.

Hamilton and Dundas have had a long and successful run in Allan Cup Trophy competition. Between 1919 and 1948, Hamilton Amateur Athletic Association and the Tigers won the Ontario Hockey Association Senior and Senior AAA championship 10 out of 13 times. The 1919 team captured the Allan Cup Trophy.

In modern times, between 1985 and 2015, the Real McCoys won the OHA John Ross Robertson Cup eight times in 15 attempts and the Allan Cup Trophy once in 2014.

The OHA and the Ontario Hockey Federation have endorsed the co-hosting aspect of the tournament, which will take place from April 6-11th, 2020. The games will be played in prime time in the Andreychuk and Grightmire Arenas.

“There will be two games each night in primetime, which we believe will work better based on what past experience tells us. Attendance for afternoon games has always been as issue. We hope this will give our fans a great reason to attend,” said Don Robertson, McCoys President and General Manager.

“This will be the Hamilton Steelhawks 5th Anniversary in the ACH. Having the opportunity to host this iconic event, and to give our fans in the Andreychuk Arena the opportunity to see the top Senior AAA teams from across Canada filled with former OHL and NHL players compete. Hamilton has hoisted the Cup once before however, It’s has been 100 years since the Hamilton Tigers won the Allan Cup Trophy. Our goal is simple build the new Steelhawks to do it once again for Hamilton in April, “said Jason Daleo, Steelhawks General Manager.

“Our team has become stronger, faster and more skilled continuing to find ways to win and we felt this was the right time to partner and host the Allan Cup to compete for a championship. It will be an amazing experience for families and hockey fans in the Greater Hamilton Area to be a part of the Allan Cup Tournament,” said George Roque, Steelhawks President and Owner.

“It’s a great event, and our fans remember our 3-2 overtime victory over Clarenville Caribous in 2014 before a standing-room-only crowd in the Grightmire. The arena will be ready to play host again, in a renovated building. We look forward to having an exciting season, with some of the old players returning and a number of new additions,” said Robertson.

This is the third time that the McCoys have played host to the Allan Cup Hockey Tournament, which marks its 20th anniversary in the OHA. The Steelhawks will be a host for the first time in its fifth season. “
