The Mohawk men’s basketball team completed it’s trip to BC losing 88-58 to Vancouver Island University Saturday (Dec. 30) in Nanaimo.
The Mountaineers dropped a pair of decisions to the Mariners, after opening up with a defeat by the Douglas Royals of New Westminster.
In Saturday’s game, the Mountaineers were certainly in it at half time, trailing only 34-29. However VIU forged their way into a comfortable lead in the middle of the third quarter.
Still, Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker felt the team played better than it did in Friday’s loss to the Mariners. They were without Lamar Barr for both games and Emmanuel Mukuna was injured early in Saturday’s defeat.
Frank Benneh was Mohawk’s top scorer with 20 points. Newcomer Rommel Calura had 15 points and Neil Santos chipped in with 10.
“This was a great experience for our guys,” said coach Jonker. “It was a great opportunity to see a beautiful part of the country, while playing three difficult CCAA Games.”The Mountaineers are unranked nationally, while VIU is number two and Douglas is number 10 in Canada.
