Bengals hungry to start playoffs on Saturday

The Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League has announced the 2019 playoff schedule and revealed the brackets.

The Hamilton Bengals, who were seeded third in the Western Conference, will face the sixth seed Owen Sound North Stars in the opening round. The series will be a best-of-five series and will start on Saturday in Hamilton. If the series runs until the very end Hamilton will host three games, the first taking place this Saturday afternoon from the Dave Andreychuk Mountain Arena starting at 2:00pm. Game three will also emanate from “The Dave” one week from Saturday at 7:00pm and game five, if necessary, will take place from The Dave on Canada Day at 2:00pm.

The teams met twice during the regular season with the Bengals winning both games. The first meeting took place on May 11th at the Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound where Hamilton took the game 11-6. At the teams’ second meeting in the Hammer the Bengals won 15-2.

The Bengals are the favourite going into Saturday’s game one.

Hamilton is fourth in the league in goals per game with an average of 13 goals scored, and they are third best in the league in goals against average. The Bengals have allowed an average of just 6.3 goals per game. They are also the top team in the entire OJBLL on the power play and covert the man advantage into a goal 48.97% of the time. On the opposite end they are also third best when it comes to penalty kill with an 80% rate.

Owen Sound are middle of the pack when it comes to goals per game with 9.25 per game, good enough for 13th in the league. They’re also 12th in the league for goals against with 8.85 goals per game. The North Stars are solid on the power play with a nearly 40% success rate though not as solid as the Bengals on the penalty kill. Owen Sound will need to keep strong on the penalty kill as the Bengals are double the league average for shorthanded goals this season,
