The Villa Maria Vikings from Buffalo defeated the Mohawk Mountaineers 99-87 in pre-sewason men’s basketball at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre Saturday (Oct. 6).
DeJaun Owens scored 19 points to lead the visitors.
Emanuel Otong continued his hot hand with 25 points and 8 rebounds for Mohawk, which has a lot of size this year but inexperience as well.
Terrance Lennox added 17 points.
The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Vikings 58-46.
It was a feisty cross border encounter. Mohawk stayed with the Vikings in the first half, as they went to the break trailing 51-43.
But Villa Maria started pulling away in the third quarter and come the fourth period they continued to build their advantage to 24 points. However the Mountaineers went on a bit of a late game surge and had cut the deficit in half by the final buzzer.
Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker said his team’s inexperience showed in the second half after playing a very good first quarter. “We didn’t handle their runs very well. We hung our heards a little too much. We looked like a young team in those situations, but we’ll learn from them and get better,” the coach said.
