The Cardinal Newman Cardinals have advanced to Saturday’s semifinal round of the OFSAA girls’ AAA high school soccer tournament in Alliston.
Newman won its quarter-final playoff, 1-0, over the hometown Banting Memorial Marauders Friday, while the other Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic league representative – the St. Thomas More Knights – lost their quarter-final, 1-0 to Lasalle’s St. Thomas of Villanova Wildcats.
The Cardinals face the St. Peter Knights of Orleans in the semifinal.
Earlier Friday, Newman completed pool play with a 1-0 victory over Kitchener’s St. Mary’s High School and a 0-0 tie against the St. Martin Mustangs of Mississauga. Heading into the playoffs, Newman’s record was 2-0-2.
More, the HWCAA champions, finished 2-1-1 in pool play after defeating Barrie’s St. Peter’s Panthers, 4-0, and losing 2-0 to the St. Peter Knights. More’s goals were scored by Makenna Williamson, Alliasen Miscione, Jen Romero and Sofia Domanico.
In AAA boys’ OFSAA soccer action, Cardinal Newman wasn’t able to qualify for the quarter-finals. The HWCAA and Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference champions tied their first two games of the tournament and then split two starts Friday – a 3-1 win over the Notre Dame Cougars of Ajax and a 4-2 loss to the St. Mary’s Eagles of Kitchener.
Ethan Bastarache, with the pair, Vince Triumbari, Bradley Mupambawashe and Nate Cusimano had the goals for Newman.
St. Mary’s took a 2-0 lead before Newman battled back to tie the score. “We were stretched trying to get the go-ahead goal,” Newman assistant coach Anthony Falconio said. “We needed to win the game to move on in a very competitive group. St. Mary’s capitalized with two goals.
“We had an amazing season, falling just one day short of our goal. We couldn’t be more proud of our players.”
