Hamilton Cardinals won their 13th game of the Intercounty Baseball League season as they edged the London Majors 5-4 in one of two games scheduled for tonight in Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium.
In other action, the game between the Barrie Baycats and Guelph Royals in Guelph was rained out. No new date has been set for the game.
The victory for the Cardinals was their 13th, and equaled their best seasonal output since 2013.
In a game that was delayed for an hour, the Majors took the early lead when Cleveland Brownlee hammered a Zack Gonzalez pitch 365 feet over the left field fence in the second inning. Hamilton rebounded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, and added single runs in the third, fifth, and eighth innings for the victory.
London mounted a two-run rally in the top of the ninth, but Josh Freeman held them at bay to earn the save. Gonzalez got the win as he went six innings allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks. He retired three batters on strikes. On the night, Freeman gave up two earned runs on three hits and walk. He had six strikeouts to his credit.
Starlin Peralta took the loss for London as he was tagged with four earned runs on six hits and four walks through five innings. He retired eight Cardinal batters on strikes. He had relief help from Braeden Ferrington and Kelvin Pichardo.
In addition to Brownlee, the Majors got three hits from RJ Fuhr and two more from Chris McQueen. Jake Foden, Laine Renaud and David Vanderby hit doubles for the Cards. Vanderby’s double in the second brought home two runs and put Hamilton into a lead that they never gave up.
The next action for Hamilton is Friday night (July 27th) when they play the Kitchener Panthers at 7:30pm in Bernie Arbour Stadium.
Sunday, July 29th, Hamilton will play a re-scheduled game with the Burlington Herd at 2:00pm. All Hamilton Cardinals Alumni will be admitted to the game free of charge.
The game between the Burlington Herd and the Cardinals originally scheduled for Sunday, July 22nd, and postponed by rain will be played Monday, July 30th at 7:30pm in Bernie Arbour Stadium.
