Celtics in the swim

Opposing high school swim teams usually are in over their head against the St. Thomas More Knights.

But not this year.

The Bishop Ryan Celtics took home the championship trophy for overall points, ending More’s run of 17 Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association swimming titles in the last 18 years.

The Celtics finished with 949 points, while the St. Mary Crusaders accumulated 942 and third-place More had 866.

Eight teams – including the ACMT Jaguars — took part in the annual competition.

It was fitting that the meet was held at McMaster University because Bishop Ryan swim coach Michael Hall formerly spent many hours in that pool – both as a member of the McMaster Marauders highly-successful water polo team and as a lifeguard.

“I was a member of the varsity men’s water polo team from 2000 to 2004,” Hall recalled. “We earned two bronze, a silver and a gold at Ontario university championships. I was also a lifeguard here and around Hamilton for almost two years.”

Hall said it was fun for him to return to Mac with his BR swimmers.

“I assume the kids have no idea of my history. When they come here and look around I can say ‘see that championship on the wall? I was part of that group.’”

When asked about Bishop Ryan’s accomplishment of taking top honours as a team, Hall said: “It was a fantastic effort. Luck plays into it, too. A lot of swimmers were missing from a few teams.”

The Celtics were led by 14-year-old Liam Iaquinto, who touched the wall first in three junior boys’ events – the 100-metre individual medley, the 50m butterfly and the 200m freestyle relay.

“I think my best accomplishment was the butterfly because I really like that stroke,” Iaquinto said. “I pride myself on it. So I was pretty happy to get first place in that.

“I used to be a competitive (club) swimmer. I would get times of 35.58 and stuff. Today, I got 35.18.”

Iaquinto estimated the Bishop Ryan team was comprised of between 42 and 50 members. He said 90-minute practices were held twice a week since September at Valley Park.

“It was amazing,” he said of the Celtics team championship. “I was surprised. I don’t think we’ve done that before. It’s a good feeling.”

Hall said he’s also proud that two Special Olympics swimmers from BR – Ryan Sorley and Brooke Fietcher –will be also be advancing to the GHAC meet.

“This will be Ryan’s third year competing,” Hall said. “And I’m pretty sure that Brooke, who is in Grade 9, has dropped her time by about a minute in the 100m freestyle.”

Next up for the top qualifiers in each event is the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championships. It is scheduled for Feb. 15 in Guelph.

This year’s Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations meet takes place Feb. 27-28 in Windsor.
