After some considerable push back yesterday from fans following the release of the Canadian Premier League’s ‘The Island Games’ schedule, the league has made a small modification to the schedule.
The opening game, a rematch of the CPL championship match from 2019 between Forge FC Hamilton and Cavalry FC, was announced on Monday to be planned for 1:00pm ET on Thursday. Reactions were almost universally negative to the time choice for the opening game, as well as the balance of the schedule which featured nearly a dozen games taking during the early afternoon (morning on the west coast) during the week.
Tuesday the league announced that at least the first game is being moved and will now take place at 8:00pm ET.
“The Island Games will be a truly made for TV event and we are very excited to be showcasing our new virtual and augmented reality technology in partnership with OneSoccer,” said a release from the league. “On Thursday August 13 we will be unveiling Canada’s first virtual stadium for a professional sporting competition in Canada.”
The release goes on to state that if the technology and production quality of the opening broadcast goes smoothly, the league will engage with fans and supporters for their reaction and contemplate further schedule changes and evening matches for the Island Games.
