An RBI single from Jake Foden in the top of the tenth inning gave the Hamilton Cardinals a 3-2 win on Thursday night in Welland. The win snaps a four game losing streak for the team and improves their record to 7-8 on the season. The loss for Welland knots the Jackfish’s record at 9-9.
Hamilton got on the board early with a pair of runs to start the game. With two on and two out in the top of the first inning, Chris Beer crosses the plate when a pitch from Jackfish pitcher Leyer gets away from the catcher. Grand Arnold would score at the same at bat when Jake Chiaravalle hit an RBI single to right field.
The lead would last until bottom of the sixth inning when the Jackfish scored their first run of the game. Vaughn Bryan hit a one-out single to right field to bring Brendon Dadson across the plate. Welland would tie the game in the next inning after a sacrifice fly from Caleb Feurstake brought Nolan Pettipiece home for the Jackfish.
Extra innings would be needed with the game tied at two following the first nine, but it wouldn’t need more than one. With one out and two runners on base, Jake Foden became the Cardinals’ hero for the night with a clutch single to right field brought Grant Arnold across the plate for the second time in the game.
Welland couldn’t match the run in the bottom of the inning and the Hamilton Cardinals took the 3-2 victory.
Hamilton pitcher Kelvin Pichardo, who took over for Stefan Strecker in the top of the 9th inning, picked up his first win of the season for the Cardinals.
Next up the Cardinals will host Friday night baseball from Carstar Field at Bernie Arbour Stadium tomorrow night. The Cards will play host to the first place Kitchener Panthers (14-3). First pitch is set for 7:30pm.
