The Stoney Creek Generals opened their season on Saturday night by welcoming the new Hamilton Steelhawks to the Gateway Ice Centre. There was no shortage of action on the night as the home side came away with a large victory, knocking off their new crosstown rivals 10-3.
The Generals left the first period with a three goal cushion after Jarrett Konkle, Ryan Healy, and Ryan O Marra all put goals into the back of the net through the first twenty minutes. Konkle added two more goals in the second period to come away with a hat trick performance in the game.
Nathan Pageau also picked up a pair of goals in the middle stanza, including a short handed maker at 5:35 of the period. Chris Knighton rounded out the scoring for the Generals in the second with Hamilton’s Cole McNeil notching the Steelhawks’ goal to open up the period.
The final frame would be a more balanced affair with the Steelhawks finding their footing in their inaugural game. Scoring in the period went back and forth with Andrew Radjenovic and Ryan Healy picking up goals for Stoney Creek. Frankie Grandits and Kevin Jaczenko lit the lamp for Hamilton.
The victory gives Stoney Creek a 1-1 record in the young season while the loss for Hamilton is their first of the year. The Generals will take the trip to Brantford on Friday night to face the Blast while the Steelhawks will visit Thorold on Friday night. Both games start at 7:30pm.
