GOJHL: Warriors Come Close in Niagara Falls

The Stoney Creek Warriors came within one goal of defeating the Niagara Falls Canucks, but an empty net goal by the Falls seals another loss for Stoney Creek 4-2.

Stoney Creek out shot the third place Canucks in the first two periods, nearly doubling the home team in the first period while throwing eighteen shots at the Niagara Falls netminder in the second. Ben O Quinn of the Canucks put on a one man show in the first two periods, scoring a hat trick for Niagara Falls leading the way to a 3-0 lead after two.

Roger Sherwood gave the Warriors some life in the third period scoring both goals for Stoney Creek. Sherwood’s first goal came just 1:34 in the period, assisted by Marco Mattina and Harry Polyoka. Ben O Quinn of the Canucks was given a double minor at 12:38 of the third period and Sherwood capitalized scoring his second goal less than a minute into the power play. Mike Casale and Stuart Isnor picked up assists on the goal.

With eight minutes to play in the game Stoney Creek had cut Niagara Falls’ lead down to 3-2.

In the dying minutes of the game Warriors goaltender Brock Novak was pulled to give Stoney Creek an extra attacker, but the team couldn’t capitalize as Cam McLean sent home an empty net goal with ten seconds left in the game to give Niagara Falls the victory 4-2.

Stoney Creek has lost their last three games and are winless at home this season. Next up for the Warriors is a return trip to the home ice of Valley Park Arena where the team will host first place St. Catharines. Game time is 7:30pm. The last time the two teams met was October 14th in St. Catharines where the Falcons doubled up the Warriors 4-2.
