GOJHL: Warriors Homecoming Spoiled by Canadians

The Warriors couldn’t find a way to beat Matt Coulombe of the Jr. Canadians as Welland defeated Stoney Creek 7-0 Saturday night.

Welland spoiled the mood in Valley Park Arena early in the first period as Mike Marquis put a quick puck in the net at just 52 seconds into the game. Less than five minutes later Matt Vizzari would add to the Jr. Canadians lead scoring at 5:12 of the period. Despite a few power plays and a strong shot that chimed off the post, the Warriors remained scoreless into the first intermission.

After both team’s goalies put on a show in the second period, including Warriors netminder Joe Lepera stopping fourteen shots, Canadians’ defenseman Aaron Beally put the puck home at 19:30 of the second period to increase Welland’s lead 3-0 going into the second intermission.

The flood gates burst wide open as the teams took to the ice in the third period as Welland would score another four goals. Marquis and Vizzari scored their second goals of the night while Matthew Mateljan added a pair of his own as Welland recorded a blow out victory over Stoney Creek.

With the tough loss the Warriors drop to 4-11 on the season, tied for seventh place with Fort Erie who also lost tonight in Thorald.

The team now has the next week off to prepare to take on the Meteors next Saturday night in Fort Erie. Puck drop is 7:15pm from the Leisureplex. The Warriors next home game at the Valley Park Arena is set for Saturday October 29th at 7:30pm when the team hosts the Port Colbourne Pirates.
