The Hamilton Smash 16U Teal team recently travelled to RIM Park in Waterloo to compete in the 16U Ontario Volleyball Association Provincial Championships. This tournament is the culmination of the indoor season for many teams, bringing over 128 teams to compete over three days in four divisions.
Rankings for provincials are based on teams’ results during the indoor season, and the Hamilton Smash 16U Teal girls, having medalled in each of their 16U tournaments this season, competed in Division 1 – ranked 23rd in the Province. After three days of intense competition, the girls were eventually crowned Division 1, Tier 3 Gold Medallists with a final Provincial ranking of 17th.
In the first day of competition, the girls faced off with three other teams in pool play. Their first match pitted them against sister team, Hamilton Smash 16U Purple, and the Teal girls won in straight sets (25-17, 25-23). The second match had them facing the Markham Wildcats who they also beat 2-0 (25-21, 25-22). In the final match of the day, the girls lost 2-0 to the Richmond Hill Thundercats (22-25, 20-25). Their second place finish in pool play meant their next day’s matches would be tough, and the girls needed to bring their best.
Their first match up of the day was against local rival MVC 16U Black, and the girls fell short, losing in straight sets (22-25, 17-25). Match 2 was against the Durham Attack Black and the girls prevailed to win in three sets (18-25, 26-24, 15-10). In Match 3, the girls faced Ottawa Maverick Wildcats and competed well but fell short to lose 2-0 (21-25, 21-25).
In the final day of competition, the girls hoped for a long day, knowing that all matches were sudden death. In the quarter-finals, the Teal girls faced the Markham Wildcats once again, beating them 2-0 (25-21, 25-10).
In semi-final action, the 16U Teal girls beat the Galaxy Rockets in straight sets (25-18. 25-22), setting them up for the gold medal match.
The championship match was against the Etobicoke Titans Atlas 16U, and the Teal girls fought hard, coming back from a deficit in the second match to win in straight sets (25-18, 25-21).
