Hard work always pays dividends

A lot of hard work both on and off the ice paid dividends for the Dundas Real McCoys last Friday night in the JL Grightmire Arena.

Just as the game was scheduled to begin, a player’s stick hit a corner of the protective glass in one of the doors at the west end of the rink and the glass shattered. An hour later, a new pane had been installed, a result of the handiwork of the arena workers. No one can remember the last time a pane of glass shattered in the arena.

When the opening whistle sounded, the McCoys were loaded for bear, and put in a solid 60 minutes of play en route to a 6-4 win over their long time rivals, the Brantford Blast. The win was the third consecutive for Dundas, and propelled them into first place in the Allan Cup Hockey league.

The next action for the McCoys is Friday, January 10th when they play a re-match with Brantford in the Brantford Civic Centre at 7:30 p.m.

“Our players came out and worked hard for 60 minutes. They were very determined defensively, and that gives us a chance to win on most nights. Every team in this League can win on any given night,” said Dundas President and General Manager Don Robertson.

“It was great to see Neil Clelland get his first win of the season, which was a big win for us. He has been a real trooper over the last few years, and the guys really worked hard for him.”

The Blast led 2-1 after the first period, however Dundas came back to tie the score at 4-4 after 40 minutes of play. In the third, Kevin Harvey gave the McCoys a 5-4 lead before Darren Haydar iced the game when he lofted a shot from his own of the rink into the empty Brantford net.

Dan LaPointe and Kevin Harvey led the Dundas scoring parade with two goals apiece. Mackenzie Wood and Haydar added a goal and an assist each, while Brad Bonello and Mark Bennett set up three and two scoring plays respectively.

Brantford got single goals from Chris Lawrence, Derek Medeiros, Doug Clarkson, and Andrew Radjenovic. Nikola Bibic and Nathan Pageau rounded out the scoring with two assists each.
