The Hamilton Honey Badgers hosted their regular season finale on Wednesday night from the FirstOntario Centre against the Niagara River Lions. The teams kept it close for much of the game but the visiting River Lions pulled away in the fourth quarter as they defeated the Honey Badgers 108-94. The loss brings the Honey Badgers’ regular season record to an even 10-10 and a fourth place finish. The Niagara River Lions improve to 15-5 and cinch first place in the league.
Ricky Tarrant Jr. was the top scorer for the Honey Badgers with 26 points in the game. Tarrant Jr., who is a finalist for the Player of the Year award, was 6 for 11 in field goals on the court and showt 50% from beyond the arc.
Demetrius Denzel-Dyson had 20 points, shooting 8 for 18 from the floor. Xavier Rathan-Mayes, who had the most minutes on the team with 33:51 played, had 13 points while Murphy Burnatowski had 11 points.
Niagara was strong on the transition, turing defensive rebounds into scoring chances all night. The visitors also passed the ball well and were all over offensive rebounds as well.
Niagara was 50% from the three-point line while Hamilton was only 35% from beyond the arc.
The Honey Badgers seemed to lose some momentum late in the game. After Hamilton tied the game 83-83, the River Lions ran the floor with nine straight points early in the fourth quarter. The Honey Badgers couldn’t come back from the late game deficit and took the loss.
The top four teams in the league that will be heading to Saskatoon for Championship Weekend have been set. The Honey Badgers will head to the Sasktel Centre to face off in a one game knockout style semi-final game on Saturday, August 24th. The championship final game takes place on Sunday, August 25th.
