Honey Badgers fall to league leading River Lions 107-96

The Hamilton Honey Badgers traveled down the QEW on Saturday night to challenge the league leading Niagara River Lions. Despite quickly dominating and taking an early lead the Honey Badgers stumbled and couldn’t recover as the River Lions took the game 107-96. Niagara improves to 6-1 while Hamilton drops to 4-3.

Niagara, who joined the inaugural CEBL season after spending the last three in the NBLC, showed why they’re the number one team in the league. The River Lions moved the ball well and found key passes in key moments. They were also strong in the defensive zone and gave the Honey Badgers a lot of trouble, forcing the black and gold to try for a lot of outside and jump shots.

While Hamilton managed to close the gap and keep things interesting through the stretch, they couldn’t recoup an 18 point first quarter deficit. What was a swift 11-2 Hamilton lead in the first quarter spiraled into a 23-14 deficit. That margin widened even further with the Honey Badgers trailing 36-18 by quarter’s end.

Scoring was spread evenly through the offence. Justin Edwards had 19 points on the night while Ryan Ejim had 15 points. Both Ricky Tarrant Jr. and Demetrius Denzel-Dyson had 14 points.

Next up the Honey Badgers will look to regroup when they host the Niagara River Lions in the back half of the home and home series. Tip off from the First Ontario Centre is set for 7:00pm on Wednesday night.
