The Hamilton Honey Badgers won their second in a row on Wednesday night as they defeated the Fraser Valley Bandits in the second of a home and home series. Though it took heading to overtime to do it the Honey Badgers defeated the Bandits 106-99. Hamilton improves to 3-2 on the season while Fraser Valley drops to 0-4.
The Honey Badgers led for much of the game only briefly giving up the lead in the first few minutes when they trailed 6-4. A quick long ball from Justin Edwards retook the lead 7-6. Hamilton would hold onto that lead until the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Fraser Valley tied the game late in the fourth quarter and Bandits’ Klassen made a free throw to give the Bandits’ the one point lead. After some quick back and fourth in the final minute of regulation the teams headed to overtime with the score tied 89-89.
Hamilton took the lead early in OT and, while Fraser Valley managed to tie the game again, the Honey Badgers retook the lead and never looked back. Honey Badger Ricky Tarrant Jr.’s layup with 1:31 to go in overtime gave Hamilton the lead for the last time as they cruised to a 106-99 victory.
Tarrant Jr. had 25 points on the night for Hamilton, Demetrius Denzel-Dyson had 32 points for the Honey Badgers. Forward Ryan Ejim had 19 points, Justin Edwards had 13 points, while Mike Fraser had 3 points. Adam Presutti had four points from the bench, Joe Rocca had eight points, and Matt Marshall netted a field goal.
With the win Hamilton sits in a three-way tie for first place in the league with a 3-2 record. Saskatchewan Rattlers are also 3-2 while the Niagara River Lions are 3-1. The Honey Badgers will next host the 2-2 Guelph Nighthawks next Wednesday night from the FirstOntario Centre. Tip off is set for 7:00pm ET.
