IBL: Baycats Shutout Thunderbirds

BARRIE – Barrie scored 11 runs on 14 hits while Brad Bissell and Greg Byron combined for a five hit shutout as the Baycats defeated the Thunderbirds 11-0. Barrie now holds a two games to none lead over Hamilton in the best of seven series.

Barrie opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Ryan Spataro reached base on an error to open the game and then was moved to third base on Trevor Pippin’s one out single. Spataro would then score on Sean Reilly’s sacrifice fly to give the Baycats a one run lead through one inning. Barrie extended their lead in the third inning when Reilly reached first base on the Thunderbirds’ second error of the game and then scored on Matt Logan’s two-run homerun.

The Baycats continued to roll as they scored four times in the fourth inning. Frankie Hare doubled and then scored on Reilly’s single to left field. The other three runs came on Sean Mattson’s homerun to give Barrie a commanding 7-0 lead. Barrie would score a single run in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Hamilton would get five hits in the game, all singles, by Warren Bradley, Mike Gottschalk, Dan Jagdeo, Darnell Duckett and Jon Saporsantos.

Matt Betts started the game for the Thunderbirds going four and two-thirds innings allowing eight runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits and a walk while striking out one batter in the loss. Brett van Pelt pitched the final three and third innings allowing three runs, one was unearned, on five hits and a walk while striking out two batters.

Brad Bissell started the game and earned the win for Barrie going seven innings allowing all five of the Thunderbirds hits while walking three and striking out five. Greg Byron relieved Bissell to start the eighth, striking out one batter over two innings of work.

Game three of the best of seven series will go on Friday night starting at 7:30pm at the Bernie Arbour Memorial Stadium. Fans that can’t make it to the game can listen live to the game live on INDI 101 FM or at www.indifm.ca.
