Joshua Soares with overtime winner for Generals in 3-2 victory

It was a close call for the Stoney Creek Generals as they hosted the Dunlops in game two of the Robertson Cup Finals. When it looked like Whitby had come away with the victory it was a couple of big “J”s with a couple of big goals that gave the Gens the tie and eventually the victory as the Generals defeated the Dunlops 3-2 in overtime.

Whitby came out of the gate hot in the first period and quickly put the puck into the net. Darren Doherty put the Dunlops on the board just 27 seconds into the first period. The one goal lead would last until the final minute of the first period when Brantford native Cam Fergus evened the score at 19:35 of the period.

The only goal of the second period came on the power play for Whitby. While Justin Donati spent time in the box for tripping Whitby’s Corey Tamblyn beat Creek netminder Ryan DeMelo at 17:06 of the period. The Dunlops took a one goal lead into intermission.

Just when it looked like the third period would end a scoreless affair Whitby’s Jake Logan took a hooking penalty in the final minute of play. That penalty would be the undoing of the Dunlops as Stoney Creek’s Jarrett Konkle took advantage of the power play opportunity and scored the game tying goal just 12 seconds later. Then at 4:08 of the overtime peroid Hamilton native Joshua Soares emptied the bench when he scored the overtime winner for the Generals.

The victory gives the Stoney Creek Generals a 2-0 series lead in the Robertson Cup Finals. The series returns to the Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek on Sunday night at 8:30pm.
