The Stoney Creek Junior Sabres shut out the Leaside Wildcats 4-0 this afternoon. The road victory improves the Sabres’ record to 16-6-2-0 which puts the girls in fourth place in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. Stoney Creek sits two points behind Toronto and Kingston who are tied for second place with 36 points.
Stoney Creek got off to a roaring start with a pair of goals in the opening minutes of the game. Ancaster native Raelene Verbruggen started the scoring just 43 seconds into the first period when she sent the puck into the back of the net. The goal was her second of the season. The goal was followed up quickly by Hamilton native Alyssa Kawa who scored her tenth goal of the season at 1:32 of the period.
Stoney Creek wouldn’t leave the ice until they added a third goal of the period courtesy of Grace Nelles. Nelles added her seventh goal of the season at 6:10.
The Sabres would hold Leaside off the scoreboard while Chantal Ste-Croix would add another goal for Stoney Creek seconds into the second period.
Kayla McDougall stopped all 11 shots she faced in goal for Stoney Creek.
Next up the Junior Sabres will visit the Burlington Barraducas on Tuesday night at 7:30pm. They will return home to Gateway Ice Centre on Friday night when they host Waterloo. Game time Friday is set for 8:35pm.
