A power play goal in the third period from Sabres’ captain Sarah Nelles proved to be the game winner as the Stoney Creek Junior Sabres defeated the Aurora Panthers 2-1 at home.
Aurora got on the board first and early in the first period with Jaclyn Kouleas scoring for the Panthers at 2:42 of the opening stanza. The one goal lead would stick until late into the second period when Brooklyn Duff scored her first goal of the season. The tying goal came at the 12:32 mark of the second period.
Sabres’ captain Sarah Nelles, who also picked up an assist on Duff’s earlier goal, found the back of the net with the game winning goal midway through the third period. The goal was Nelles’ second goal of the season. Ainsley Svetek and Megan Carter picked up assists on the play.
Amanda Rampado picked up the win in goal for the Creek making 20 saves on 21 shots.
Stoney Creek will hit the road for the next four games, starting Sunday afternoon when they visit the Durham West Lightning at 2:30pm from the Ajax Community Centre. The Junior Sabres won’t be back at home from the Gateway Ice Centre until October 27th.
