Another weekend means another hockey tournament for the Stoney Creek Sabres with the Junior squad hosting the annual University Showcase this weekend. The tourney is the second of three straight weekend with the girls hockey organization hosting an international scouting tournament in Hamilton.
Last weekend saw the Midget AA Sabres team, who will also be participating in this weekend’s tournament, host the Midget AA Showcase at the Gateway Ice Centre in Stoney Creek and the Mohawk 4 Ice Centre on Hamilton mountain.
This weekend’s University Showcase will see 64 teams from across North America descending on Hamilton to participate in a wild weekend of hockey. Each of the 64 squads will play four round robin games over Friday and Saturday before playing placement, Bronze, and Gold medal games on Sunday. In all there will be a whopping 164 games of hockey being played in 72 hours.
The Stoney Creek Junior Sabres, who compete in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League out of Gateway Ice Centre, will be joined from fellow PWHL teams from Brampton, Etobicoke, Whitby, Cambrdge, Ottawa, Burlington, Durham West, Southwest, Toronto, Central York, Nepean, Kingston, Bluewater, Leaside, and London.
In many ways the tournament gives the PWHL teams a chance to scope out the league competetion before the regualar season gets underway next week.
Both the Midget AA and Junior Sabres kick off their games on Friday morning with the Juniors playing at Gateway and Midget AA spending Friday at Mohawk.
