It was close for most of the night, but in the end the McMaster Marauders downed the Mohawk Mountaineers 93-83 in their annual pre-season men’s basketball game Tuesday (Oct. 20).
This year’s contest between the university and college squads was as intense as ever. In the first quarter Mohawk trailed only once as they grabbed a 27-22 lead.
However in the second quarter, Mac came alive and led 48-43 at the break.
The Marauders extended their lead to 10 points with a quick start in the third quarter, but the Mountaineers went on an 8-0 run to get to within two points, 55-53. However, a few minutes later McMaster basically did the same, going on a 10-2 run and they led 74-61 at three quarter time..
It looked at this point like Mac would pull away, but Mohawk kept pecking away and reduced their deficit to just four points, 81-77, following a Kojo Afari bucket midway through the final period. But the Marauders didn’t let the score get any closer and were able to come away with their ten point victory.
Troy Joseph led McMaster with 23 points. Rohan Boney had 22.
Mohawk’s Xzennis Brereton was the game’s top scorer with 27 points, including numerous slam dunks. Lamar Barr scored 22.
