The Marauders find themselves in an unfamiliar spot as they head to the U SPORTS Championship, but a very familiar opponent awaits them when they get there.
After coming away from a titanic, five-set Forsyth Trophy final in Kingston with OUA silver Sunday, McMaster was seeded seventh for the U SPORTS Championship tournament which begins Friday, March 15 in Quebec City.
That marks McMaster’s lowest seed at the national tournament since the Marauders hosted the 2007 edition.
The first hurdle standing in the Marauders way will be the no. 2-ranked Trinity Western Spartans, who have gotten the better of them in each of the past four national tournaments. Meeting in the semifinals of the 2015, 2017 and 2018 events, the two teams also battled for the Tantramar Trophy at McMaster’s Burridge Gym in 2016.
The two teams renew their rivalry in the third of Friday’s quarterfinals, with first serve scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The entirety of the championship tournament will stream live on USPORTS.live.
Fresh from their Forsyth Trophy triumph, the Queen’s Gaels will also represent the OUA at the U SPORTS Championship in the sixth seed.
The Canada West champion Brandon Bobcats enter play as the top seed, while the host and Quebec conference champion Laval Rouge et Or boast the no. 3 seed.
Rounding out the field, the Canada West bronze medalist Mount Royal Cougars sit fourth, the wildcard Alberta Golden Bears fifth and the Quebec runners up Montreal Carabins hold the eighth and final spot.
