McMaster’s Meeuwisse and Raez Villanueva Bring in Four-Medal Haul at Canada Summer Games

Two McMaster runners, Soren Meeuwisse and Sergio Rez Villanueva, have climbed the podium at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg, accounting for four Ontarian medals across two different sports.

Chosen as Team Ontario’s flag bearer for the event, second-year Marauder Soren Meeuwisse backed up the honour by achieving a podium place in both events in which she was entered.

Accomplished as a mountain biker in addition to her role as a varsity-level cross country runner, Meeuwisse finished third in the cross country mountain bike event, completing the course at the Bison Butte Mountain Bike Course in 1:31.09 on Sunday, July 30.

The kinesiology student followed her exceptional individual performance by helping Team Ontario to silver, alongside Dana Gilligan and Jenn Jackson, in the relay event on Tuesday, August 1.

A transfer from McGill who will suit up for the Marauders for the first time in the fall, Sergio Raez Villanueva put his long distance credentials on the track on full display at the University of Manitoba, finishing third in both the 1500m and 5000m events.

Raez Villanueva opened his showing at the University of Manitoba track with a time of 3:56.35 in the 1500m on August 3 that beat out fellow Ontarian Josh Kellier by just over a second for the final podium place.

The biochemistry major returned to the track the next night, and added a second bronze to his medal tally by running the 5000m event in 14:30.03.
