The Humber Hawks spoiled Mohawk’s OCAA softball opening day with a pair of victories over the Mountaineers at Mohawk Sports Park Sunday (Sep. 9).
The Hawks won game one 14-5 and took the second 9-1.
Humber jumped out to a 4-0 third inning lead in cold and very windy conditions on Hamilton Mountain.
Shelby Hayward’s RBI single got the Mountaineers on the board in the bottom of the third, but Humber tacked on two runs in the fourth inning.
Mohawk’s best offensive spell of the day came in the bottom of the fourth, as they scored four times, to trail 6-5. Kennedy Peirce, Emma Nordoff, Hayward and Stephanie Godden drove in the runs. But Humber responded with two runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and another three in the seventh.
Aaliyah Davidson led the Humber offense with three RBI, while Sarah Franchetto and Bonnie Gillingham added two each.
Rachel Matheson-Green was the winning pitcher, while Alyssa Van der werf was charged with the defeat.
In game two, the teams were scoreless for the first three innings, but Humber exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth frame. A bases loaded triple by Emily Erskine was the key blow. Gillingham, Davidson and Meaghan Murphy also drove in runs in the big inning.
Emma Nordoff got the Mountaineers going with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth inning.
No more runs were scored until the top of the seventh, when Humber tallied three times, courtesy of hits by Erskine, Kate Kostuch, and Alexa Vassos.
Bree Donaldson was the winning pitcher as she went the distance on the rubber. Brianne Forti was tagged with the loss.
The next outings for Mohawk will be at Conestoga Wednesday night (Sep. 12).
