The Mohawk men’s basketball team has been eliminated from the race for the OCAA Championship, but they didn’t go down without a fight.
The Mountaineers dropped an 86-76 decision to the George Brown Huskies, in their crossover qualifying game in Toronto Saturday (Feb. 24).
This was despite a titanic 34 point effort from Rommel Calura, which included going 8-for-17 in three point attempts. Lamar Barr scored 14 points and Frank Benneh added 13.
DJ James led the Huskies with 17 points.
The Mountaineers trailed 40-28 at halftime. They managed to get to within six points in the second half, but no closer.
“I am real proud of the effort,” said Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker. “We played hard right to the final whistle. It was a disappointing loss but I feel we are headed back in the right direction,” said the coach. “We’ll miss the the guys who are leaving, especially Barr, who has had such an impact in his four years, with gold and silver medals and two trips to the Nationals.”
