The term ‘bridesmaid’ is often attached to a sports team which falls just short of a championship multiple times.
Unfortunately, this tag can be placed on the Mohawk Mountaineers, who have gone to the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Championship the last four years, each time coming home with silver medals around their necks.
The Humber Hawks have defeated them the last three years and Humber plays host to the 2017-18 OCAA showcase starting Friday (March 2).
Mohawk will meet the Seneca Sting in their quarter final at 1:00 pm.
Someone said “good things come in small packages,” and that is certainly the case when it comes to 5-4 guard Stef Hrymak, who completed her fifth and final regular season smashing four Mohawk offensive records.
The Hamilton Westdale graduate has played more games in her career than anyone, at 83. She is the all-time points leader with 1,114. And her three point shooting is like an art form. Hrymak is the Mountaineers all-time leader in three point field goals, with 140 and she set the Mohawk single season record for 3-pointers with 42, in 2017-18.
Hrymak also has all those silver medals. One coloured gold would be a perfect end to an all-time great career.
