Laura Stankovic broke open a one goal game with a second half hat trick, as the Mohawk Mountaineers downed the Lambton Lions of Sarnia 4-0, in OCAA women’s soccer in Ancaster Tuesday (Sep. 11).
Stankovic, the team captain this year, had an early influence in the game. She was taken down in the box in the ninth minute, resulting in a penalty kick. However, Sarah Incretolli was stopped by Lions goalkeeper Madison Mika, who made a diving save to her right.
But two minutes later, Mohawk opened the scoring when Sarah Ongarato converted Cassandra Vanderlaan’s cross for the only goal of the first half.
The Mountaineers were much better in the second half. Stankovic got her first goal four minutes after the re-start. She had a great individual effort to get her second marker in the seventh minute, then scored the game’s final goal in the 86th minute.
Sabrina Mariani got the shutout.
Mohawk upped its record to 2-0, while Lambton dropped to 0-2.
Meanwhile, the Mohawk men defeated Lambton 6-0. Oginri Agi scored the last three goals in the second half.
Like the women, the Mountaineer men scored the lone goal in the first half. Starting Mohawk goalkeeper Phil Lucek made a dazzing save on a free kick taken just outside the penalty box and Joseph Barkovich then got onto a long ball and blasted it home in the 22nd minute.
Lee Muis took over in goal for the Mountaineers for the second half and saw his team strike quickly, as Mohammed Afana tallied mere seconds after the kickoff.
Ten minutes later the ball broke for Adam Villella who hammered home a high hard shot.
Then it was the Oginri Agi show as he scored three times in 11 minutes. He had a nice shot from 15 yards in the 72nd minute, showed some nifty footwork and slotted his second goal at 76 minutes, and then headed home after Afana hit the bar on an 83rd minute corner kick.
Mohawk improved to 1-1, while Lambton slipped to 0-2.
