The holiday season has ended and Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) volleyball began second semester play as the Mohawk Mountaineers played host to the Sheridan Bruins at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre Wednesday.
And the men had quite a battle. It went to a fifth and deciding set with the Mountaineers prevailing in the end, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-10, 16-14.
Mohawk’s Charlie Hancock picked up from where he left off in the first half of the season, with 16 kills, two service aces and one stuff block. Andrew Dube collected 12 points and four aces. Adam Schiedel had 10 kills and three blocks and Mark Kaveckas logged 48 assists.
For the Bruins, Jeremy Fantin had 16 kills, two aces and four blocks. Josh Butler had 14 kills, one ace and two blocks. Ricky Brar notched 27 assists.
With the victory, Mohawk improved to 8-1, while Sheridan fell to 7-3.
The Mohawk women dropped a 3-0 decision to Sheridan. The scores were 25-19, 25-21, 25-10. Kirsten Bialachowski had nine kills, one stuff block and on two digs for the Mountaineers. Chantal Baker, Kaylee Duncan and Alexandria Pulham each had four kills. Lynsay Collette had 22 assists.
For Sheridan, Sommer Maltby had 10 kills, one block and seven digs. Melissa Cappelletti produced nine kills, four service aces and eight digs and Joelle Parnham collected three kills, 25 assists and eight digs.
Sheridan upped it’s record to 8-2 while Mohawk slipped to 2-7.
