Mohawk Women Get Bye to OCAA BB Championship

The Mohawk women’s basketball team clinched second place in the West Division, defeating the team chasing them.

The Mountaineers beat the visiting Fanshawe Falcons 77-51 Tuesday and will have a bye to the OCAA Championship at Seneca College March 2-4.

The Mountaineers finished the season on a six game win streak and were 14-4 overall. Fanshawe wound up 12-6, the same as Niagara and St. Clair.

Jasmina Kucic led the Mountaineers against the Falcons with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Careena Browne scored 15 points and Sam Pocrnic had 14.

Anique Daley and Natalie Warren each had 12 points for Fanshawe.

The Mohawk men’s basketball team ended a very difficult season with a 4-12 record, including a ten game losing streak at the end. Fanshawe beat them 104-92 Tuesday.

The Mountaineers trailed by 26 points, but clawed their way back to within seven. However, they couldn’t make it all the way back and the Falcons managed to see the game out.

Lamar Barr of the Mountaineers led all scorers with 27 points and he added 11 rebounds. Brey Sebeya had 14 points and Mat Elcock contributed 12.

Chris Parker had 20 points for Fanshawe, while Deandre Austin, Alfred Johnson and Filip Pejic each had 16 points and Pejic added 11 boards for the Falcons who were 9-7 over the regular season and face a crossover qualifying game if they are to make the OCAA Championship.
