Mohawk Women off to fast Soccer start

First year snipers provided the firepower, as the Mohawk women’s soccer team opened its 2018 OCAA campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Niagara Knights Saturday (Sep. 8).

Midfielder Cassandra Vanderlaan (Drumbo – Paris District) scored two goals and defender Erin Ostronic (Stoney Creek – Orchard Park) picked up the other one, in the game played at Niagara.

Second year goalkeeper Sabrina Mariani (Guelph – John F. Ross) got the shutout.

“We played really well through the middle,” said Mountaineers’ co-head coach Michael Castellani. “Everyone stepped up today. It was a good result for our first game against a pressuring team.”

The Mohawk women get back into action Tuesday (Sep. 11). It’ll be the home opener at Redeemer and will get under way at 6:00 pm.
