Niagara Knights displayed a potent attack, but just edged the Mohawk Mountaineers 3-2, to open the OCAA men’s soccer season in Welland Saturday (Sep. 8).
The Knights peppered third year goalkeeper Philip Lucek, outshooting the Mountaineers 23-5 and 14 of their shots were on goal.
Noah DiEgidio put Niagara in front in the second minute. Second year striker Adam Villella equalized for Mohawk at 35 minutes. However, Oti Frigole scored in the final minue of the first half and the home side led 2-1 at the half.
Frigole upped the margin to 3-1 in the 61st minute. Five minutes later, Striker Olisaemeta Ogbonnaya (Lagos – Columbia College) got the Mountaineers to within one goal, but the Knights held on for the victory.
The Mountaineers will attempt to even their record in their home opener Tuesday (Sep. 11) when the Lambton Lions of Sarnia visit. Game time will be 8:00 pm at Redeemer University College in Ancaster.
