Nogard Scores a Pair in Warriors’ Victory

Luke Nogard scores a pair just over a minute apart for Stoney Creek as the Warriors defeat the Buffalo Junior Blades 4-3.

The Warriors got off to an early start and wouldn’t look back with three goals in the first five minutes of the opening period. Tyler VanKleef scored his thirteenth goal of the season at 2:48. Mike Casale and Brandon Elliott picked up assists on the goal. Thirty seconds later Luke Nogard scored his first of back to back goals to give Stoney Creek an early 3-0 lead. Nogard found the back of the net first at 3:24 followed quickly at 4:45 when he sent the puck passed Buffalo’s goaltender. Kyle Phibbs and Henry Berger each assisted on one goal while Harry Polyoka picked up points on both goals.

Midway through the first period Buffalo picked up some ground with two goals. Gavin Abbott managed to solve Warriors’ netminder Brock Novak at 12:48 first followed by Ryan Sheehan three minute later.

Brandon Elliott tapped a goal home, which would turn out to be the game winner, at 6:45 of the second period. Brandon Vuic and Max Lindsay had assists on the goal. Blades’ Cody Teijeira found the back of the Stoney Creek net once more at 9:33 to cut the lead back to one goal, but Novak shut the door and held on to lead his Warriors’ to victory 4-3.

Buffalo had the edge in shots during the game, including out shooting the Warriors’ 11-5 in the third period. Brock Novak had twenty five saves on the night.

The game was riddled with penalties. Stoney Creek had 41 penalty minutes while Buffalo had 33 minutes in infractions during the game. Despite the high number of penalty minutes both teams were perfect on the penalty kill with no goals being scored with a man advantage.

With the victory Stoney Creek picks up some ground on the Welland Canadians in the standings while widening their lead over Fort Erie. We’ll be watching closely as the two teams face one another on Sunday night.

The Warriors have the week off and will travel to St Catharines Friday night to take on the conference leaders. Puck drop for the contest is 7:30pm.
